'The City' is the
original Londinium, founded by the Romans, and the powerhouse of
the empire Britain built up in imitation. Full of historic
churches and buildings and tiny mediaeval alleyways it's often
overlooked by tourists who just visit St Paul's and the Tower of
London, to their cost, for it's really worth discovering the rest
of the 'square mile'. We've a large section on the City in this
guide, and several itineraries for walks - to discover the hidden
treasures like the ancient guildhalls and the best preserved
ancient churches in London. See 'The City'
section for more details.
Transport: Bank or St Paul's tube stations on the Central line, or
Monument on the Circle Line.
