Notting Hill, made
famous by the film of the same name, has always been fashionable,
even when it was the home of the black immigrants of the 1950s,
who displaced earlier Italian immigrants, who displaced...and it
retains an odd mixture of genteel and funky. Strangely (and
controversially) all the black population were erased from the
film of the same name - it's a very ethnically diverse area. Full
of restaurants and pubs, it's mostly visited for the famous
Portobello Road market on Saturdays (very crowded in summer) - see
our markets section for further details. Rows of beautiful
stucco'd houses - lots of pop stars and other cultural icons live
here and together with the more sedate Holland Park area next door
it's good for celeb spotting in the evenings. Bridget Jones eats
here which says a lot about the area. Tube: Notting Hill Gate,
Ladbroke Grove.
